The ASP was founded in 1961 to further the study of ancient Greek and Latin papyri and of the materials contained in them. The Society supports and encourages research in the field, the teaching of the discipline, and international cooperation by scholars. The ASP publishes The Bulletin of the American Society of Papyrologists (BASP), the only North American journal in the field of papyrology. It also publishes a monograph series, American Studies in Papyrology, and occasional supplements to BASP.

The ASP holds its Annual Meeting in conjunction with the APA/AIA Annual Meeting; the Annual Meeting features speakers as well as the election of officers and other business. As part of the Annual Meeting, the ASP sponsors a panel of about five papers on a wide range of subjects within the field of papyrology. The ASP also sponsors a continuing panel on "" at the annual meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature.

Under ASP sponsorship, a consortium of universities is hosting a series of intensivesummer institutes in papyrology. Aimed at advanced graduate students and younger faculty in relevant fields, including Classics, Ancient History, Egyptology, Archaeology, Ancient Religions, and Biblical Studies, the institutes provide participants with sufficient instruction and practical experience to enable them to make productive use of texts on papyrus in their research and to become active scholars in the field of papyrology. Each seminar has a distinctive linguistic, chronological, or thematic focus, reflecting the interests and available resources of the host institution.The next Summer Institute will be at Princeton University in 2014. Currently the institutes have been scheduled from 2003 through 2015, but our goal is to establish an endowment to subvent and continue the program in perpetuum. Through the generosity of its members and friends, ASP has raised a substantial amount towards that goal, but seeks your help to finish the task.
